I’ve Signed Up to Switch Off : Earth Hour 2009

March 9th, 2009 by graceskye and tagged , ,

On Saturday, March 28, 2009, at 8:30 pm, COMTECH INSTITUTE will be taking part in what promises to be an amazing an inspiring event in the flight against climate change—Earth Hour, sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund.

By simply turning off all non-essential lighting for one hour at our locations and facilities across Philippines/world, we will join tens of millions of concerned citizens and corporations throughout the world in calling for action to save our planet for future generations.

More than 50 million people in 370 cities around the world took part in Earth Hour 2008. The lights went out at Sydney’s Opera House, Rome’s Coliseum, the Empire State Building and the Golden Gate Bridge. Even the Google homepage went dark for the day. Many major corporations took part including HP, Coca-Cola, and Morgan Stanley.

This year, Earth Hour promises to be even bigger. In Philippines, many cities have already pledged to participate including Zamboanga City…with more signing up daily. They will join international cities such as Beijing, Cape Town, Copenhagen, Edinburgh, Helsinki, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Las Angeles, London, Manila, Mexico City, Moscow, New York, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Rome, and Toronto.

To get a better sense of the magnitude and inspiring nature the event, please take a moment to watch WWF’s video about Earth Hour 2009 at www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjWD8pbK5t8.

To help us make sure the lights actually do go out on March 28th, we’d like to ask that all employees switch off office lights and unplug non-essential equipment before leaving the building on the Friday before Earth Hour. In addition, we’d like to encourage everyone to participate in Earth Hour by turning off their lights at home during the event.

We’ll also be asking our customers, business partners and suppliers to join us in supporting Earth Hour.

Participating in Earth Hour is easy, fun and absolutely free. For more information and to sign up for the event, visit www.earthhour.org where you’ll find fun tips for what you and your family and friends can do when the lights go out.

Energy efficiency is not only good for the bottom line, our company has long believed that we have a responsibility to operate our business in a responsible manner and in ways that don’t deplete our world’s limited natural resources.

In the weeks leading up to Earth Hour, we will take an even closer look at actions we can take throughout the organisation to operate more efficiently, waste less and reduce our environmental footprint—not only in our own businesses, but throughout our supply chain.

I invite all of you to share your ideas for ways that we can reduce our environmental footprint.

We’re excited about Earth Hour and hope you are too. Don’t forget—March 28th at 8:30 pm, switch off.

The local committee slept like only two hours. Yep. We are looking forward to the second time around. Thank you everyone for supporting this event.

2009 Imagine Cup Photography Competition

February 9th, 2009 by graceskye and tagged ,

2009 Imagine Cup Theme: “Imagine a world where technology helps solve the toughest problems facing us today”

source:http://imaginecup.com/Competition/mycompetitionportal.aspx?competitionId=25

A message from the Photography Captain:
The Millenium Development Goals are big goals! To me, they seem almost impossible to solve. How can we help kids around the world finish their primary education? Reduce child mortality? Eradicate poverty? Thru pictures - I can tell a story. Through photos, we can ensure that every single person in the world is aware of these problems, and show them examples on how to change the world just a little. The only way to solve these challenges is all together. If some years ago a 12 year old girl stood up in front of the world leaders to raise these issues, why don’t you do the same with the tools you have handy? Hear Bono talking about one of these issues and then think about the way you can do… anything. Talk to your friends that love photography, create a team, invite other students to participate in the competition and tell the story. WE can do something. Happy shooting!
- Leandro Doeyo

Research Workshop held at COMTECH INSTITUTE

February 9th, 2009 by graceskye and tagged ,

Inspired with the theme – A Walkthrough in Research Writing and Appreciation, research students convened last month at the Social Hall, Creative Technologies and Convergence Center to listen to various lectures on research topic selection, applied research methodologies, APA referencing and treated with a Case Study presentation by Ms. Margaret F. Bello in the afternoon session.

The workshop provides a venue for student researchers investigating topics in Information and Communication Technologies and service management groups. Participants had the opportunity to receive suggestions on possible research topics and in turn heard some feedback from the lecturers on the proposals they have in mind.

My love affair with Netbeans

October 20th, 2008 by graceskye

This morning I choose to share about my love affair with Netbeans. Our paths crossed sometime February 2005 during the Philippine Society of Information Technology Educators, Inc. National Conference here in Mindanao, Philippines. I was then a fresh graduate of two years. Then, it was but unfortunate that I was one of those many who have not savored its true prowess – not that I ignored but simply because the opportunity was not mine at those times to shake hands with this IDE – Netbeans. To sum up, sadly, our instructors failed to introduce us 
However, it was in a split second when the Sun Microsystem Program Manager- Philippines swept me from where I was seated into having an empowered mind as I look forward to a seamless and robust programming style and campaign to add to that – because Netbeans was introduced to us – in a short period – I got hooked. My inspirations intensified as fellows from the academe continuously benefit as I write this, from the auspices of the Java Education and Development Initiative (JEDI) Philippines…and my love affair grew kinder and special not only in improving my Java programming skills but specifically – knowing more of Netbeans and its versions almost every year from such swift development from great teamwork. In truth, my first java programs were compiled using Netbeans 4.1. I have never been introduced to an IDE that has so much potential and demonstrates agile performance to top it all and Netbeans continuously amazes me every year for their newer versions and newer capabilities. Now I can teach my students Java with Netbeans with such ease that I even participated as a resource speaker in the recent Software Freedom Day 2008 celebration in Isabela City talking about Netbeans to the community  Hehehe! Fun times!
Netbeans has become a part of my life and my one love affair that won’t make me sleep as I eagerly glue my eyes on the monitor to test codes. Netbeans opened up a potential thread inside me that now, I do enjoy programming and share code techniques. Indeed, it will always play a spark that lures to me get updated in the digital world.

My congratulations to the brains behind Netbeans! Happy 10th Birthday Celebration!
Thank you JEDI! Thank you Netbeans!
